It was a smallish (only about 50 riders), but high quality field in the Men 30+ event at Krispy Kreme. Evo sent Adam, Nima, and me. There were several attacks early that we were able to keep in check. Finally “the one” went, and we had Nima in it. Adam and I worked to keep the rest of the field together, hoping the rest of us would finish in a bunch sprint. Nima worked hard in his group, winning a prime and getting nipped at the line for a 2nd one along the way. His group had around 15 riders altogether. About 10 laps from the end, 2 broke off the front of that. A First State Velo guy and a NCVC, I think (Jen is still a little slow to identify all the foreign uniforms). They almost lapped what was left of the field. A few more leaked off the front of Nima’s group as I plus 3 others bridged up. In the split second that we caught the front group, there was an attack to catch the leakers, so those of us that had just caught on were popped off the back. Back to the main field we went. As the final laps approached, the main field started to break apart. I was with a group of 8 or 9, and found myself in good position (5th) as we rounded turn 3. We came out of turn 4, and I took off, winning the “field” sprint for 16th. Adam finished in our group, for 23rd. Nima put in a good sprint, after a hard, HOT, day’s work, in the “front group”, and finished 10th, and also had a prime to take home. Thanks to all who supported us from the sides in the blazing heat.
Side note: kudos to Adam’s kids, who are the future Petacchi’s of the Evo team … they lit up the streets in the kids races J
